Celebrating Heritage Through Textile Art
Alongside the Boyne Tapestry, Threads of Lore develops a variety of creative heritage projects that celebrate Irish culture through embroidery and storytelling. From commemorative banners to collaborative community artworks, each project project is unique, combining historical research with artistic interpretation and traditional embroidery techniques. Our projects continue to grow as we discover new stories waiting to be told through thread.
The Threads of Lore Group – In the Beginning
The Threads of Lore group was established in 2022 after the Covid Pandemic and was primarily set up to encourage people, many of them in their older years to ‘come out’ again and meet socially to share their embroidery skills and experience. From the beginning, the group provided a creative outlet for experienced sewers, who contributed their skills to teach and mentor those with less experience, ensuring the preservation and continuation of this ancient craft. Novices benefited from the guidance and expertise of the group, helping to sustain the heritage of embroidery for future generations. Our first few months were spent honing our skills. Some members had never sewed before while others were talented and experience helped them along. From learning the seed stitch, to how to create shading the novices learnt the skills necessary to create images.
Journey of the River Boyne in Threads
Our flagship project celebrates the River Boyne through twelve embroidered panels, tracing its journey from source to sea while showcasing the myths, legends, monuments and historic events that define this remarkable landscape.
Bloomsday Banner
Commissioned by Dunshaughlin Historical Society and created to celebrate Bloomsday being celebrated in Dunshaughlin in 2024 in conjunction with The Dunshaughlin Players, this beautifully embroidered banner honours the life and work of James Joyce. The banner is proudly displayed in the James Joyce Centre in Dublin and demonstrates the group’s ability to interpret literary heritage through textile art.
Voyage of Hope
Voyage of Hope is a moving community tapestry project that tells the story of the sixteen young women who left Dunshaughlin Workhouse in 1849 to begin a new life in Australia under the Earl Grey Assisted Emigration Scheme. Through detailed historical research, original artwork and traditional embroidery, Threads of Lore is preserving this remarkable chapter of local history, honouring the courage, resilience and hope of those who embarked on a life-changing journey across the world.
Christmas Banners
Threads of Lore created 2 Christmas Tapestries
Two Christmas Tapestries were created in 2023, one depicts a nativity scene while the other depicts the 12 days of Christmas. Both of these have been displayed in local businesses in Dunshaughlin during the Christmas period over the last 4 years and have been instrumental in new members joining the group after they viewed the pieces of work.
2023 was finished by the creation of 2 Christmas Tapestries– a Nativity Scene and the 12 Days of Christmas. This was the first time all the embroidered images created by the members were formed into unified pieces. Each image was drawn and then transferred onto fabric and the stitcher decided. what stitches to use. The colours chosen was left up to each stitcher but when the tapestries were created, despite the contrasting colours chosen there was great unity in each completed tapestry. The pieces were displayed in the window of Lawless’s Bar throughout the Christmas period and favourable comments were received with delight by the group.
Future Projects
Threads of Lore continues to develop new ideas inspired by Ireland’s rich heritage. As the group grows, new collaborative projects will explore additional stories, places and traditions through embroidery, ensuring that more of Ireland’s remarkable history is preserved for future generations.
