A Story Stitched Along Ireland’s Most Historic River
The River Boyne has shaped Ireland’s landscape, history and imagination for thousands of years. Flowing from its source near Carbury, County Kildare, through the heart of the Boyne Valley before reaching the Irish Sea at Mornington, it has witnessed some of the country’s most significant events, inspired countless legends and nurtured generations of communities. The Journey of the River Boyne in Threads seeks to capture this remarkable story in a way that is both artistic and enduring. Created by Threads of Lore, this ambitious community project is a twelve-panel embroidered tapestry that celebrates the rich history, mythology, archaeology and folklore associated with one of Ireland’s most iconic rivers.
From Source to Sea
Each panel represents a different stage of the Boyne’s journey, following the river from its sacred source through ancient landscapes, historic settlements and legendary sites before reaching the sea. Along the way, the tapestry tells stories of kings and queens, saints and scholars, warriors and pilgrims, while celebrating the monuments, wildlife and traditions that have made the Boyne Valley one of Ireland’s most treasured heritage landscapes. As the tapestry unfolds, visitors will encounter places such as the Hill of Tara, Trim, Slane, Newgrange, Mellifont Abbey, Drogheda and the Boyne Estuary, each represented through carefully researched embroidery that reflects the unique character and significance of the location.
History, Mythology and Folklore Woven Together
The River Boyne is far more than a waterway. It is woven into Ireland’s earliest myths and legends. Throughout the tapestry, ancient stories sit alongside historical events, creating a rich narrative that spans thousands of years. Visitors will discover figures such as Queen Boann, Cú Chulainn and Daniel O’Connell alongside treasured artefacts, medieval monuments and stories that have been passed from generation to generation. Every embroidered image has been carefully selected to illustrate an important moment, place or legend connected to the river and the communities that have flourished along its banks.

Research Before Every Stitch
Before a single stitch is placed, every scene begins with extensive historical research. The members of Threads of Lore work closely with historians, artists and local heritage experts to ensure each panel accurately reflects the stories it represents. Once the research is complete, an artist develops an original illustration before the painstaking embroidery begins. Every section is carefully planned, with stitches, colours and textures chosen to capture the finest details of each scene. The result is a tapestry that combines traditional craftsmanship with historical interpretation, creating a unique visual record of the Boyne Valley.

A Community Effort
The Journey of the River Boyne in Threads is entirely community driven. Created by the dedicated members of Threads of Lore, each panel represents hundreds of hours of voluntary work, collaboration and shared learning. Members meet every Friday in Dunshaughlin Library, where ideas are developed, research is discussed and embroidery continues, one stitch at a time. The project has brought together people with a shared passion for heritage, creativity and traditional craftsmanship, demonstrating the remarkable achievements that are possible through community collaboration.

A Living Legacy
The Journey of the River Boyne in Threads is more than an embroidery project. It is a celebration of Ireland’s cultural heritage, a tribute to traditional textile skills and a lasting record of the stories that have shaped the Boyne Valley. As each new panel is completed, the tapestry continues to grow, preserving these remarkable stories for future generations while inspiring visitors to explore the history, mythology and landscapes that make the River Boyne so extraordinary. We invite you to follow our progress as this unique tapestry unfolds, discovering the stories, people and places stitched into every panel along the way.
